Description

The Librarian for Metadata Operations and Services serves acritical role in providing the ASU community with seamless accessto the Librarys extensive collection of print and digitalresources. Reporting to the Unit Head for Acquisitions and Metadata Services, the Librarian, Metadata Operations and Services providesstrategic direction and supervision to a team of metadata staff andis responsible for hiring, training, and evaluating team members.Working collaboratively with Library colleagues and communitypartners, this position leads and coordinates initiatives tooptimize resource discovery by fostering workflow innovation andimplementing recognized and emerging metadata standards. Theposition also directs and manages the units authority controlactivities and the Librarys participation in national cooperativeprograms.

Essential Functions

• Provides strategic direction for resource descriptionactivities across formats and platforms and assesses theapplication of technology to enhance discovery and fosterefficient, innovative workflows.

• Provides leadership, mentoring and supervision to Metadatastaff. Evaluates staff performance and supports professionaldevelopment and training initiatives.

• Plans, implements, and coordinates metadata projects to supportcurrent and future discoverability objectives. Gathers and analyzesdata with the goal of enhancing metadata design and supportingretrieval and discovery.

• Creates and manages metadata for all formats using Resource Description and Access, MARC, non-MARC and emerging standards.Coordinates metadata enhancement, normalization, and transformationprojects.

• Cultivates library-wide collaborations by engaging colleaguesto inform and support metadata services work. Effectively managesinclusive user expectations while maintaining positive andproductive relationships.

• Provides direction and goal setting for the Librarys authoritycontrol activities. Evaluates vendor services in relation to localrequirements and performs authority-related maintenance in thelibrary catalog.

• Serves as the ASU Librarys Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) liaison and reviews and revises submissions to the PCCs nameand subject authority components.

• Participates in the creation, development, and implementationof unit and team policies and procedures; helps set unit/team goalsand priorities within the framework of the ASU Library goals andpriorities, and assists in the creation, development, andmaintenance of tools and resources used by Acquisitions and Metadata staff.

• Performs and/or manages other responsibilities asassigned.

• Participates in professional contribution and serviceactivities.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• Masters degree in library and/or information science from an Americ an Library Association-accredited program

• Cataloging and metadata experience in a libraryenvironment

• Experience and proficiency with recognized metadata standards(RDA, MARC, LCSH)

• Supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working in an academic or research library

• Experience with developing and documenting metadata policies,procedures and/or workflows

• Experience with emerging metadata models and standards such as BIBFRAME, non-MARC schema, etc.

• Experience with metadata remediation, maintenance,normalization, and/or interoperability initiatives

• Experience with integrated library systems, bibliographicutilities, and library vendor services

• Experience with authority control and PCC standards andpractices

• Strong project management skills and attention to detail

• Experience with and/or interest in utilizing technology andartificial intelligence for metadata or discovery initiatives

• Experience working collaboratively with staff, administrators,and other stakeholders

• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizationalskills

• Experience with adapting to change and demonstrating creativityand initiative

Salary and Rank:  This is a continuing appointment track Academic Professional position; Assistant/Associate Librarian rankand salary dependent on experience.
