Preston Fire & Emergency Services FULL TIME FIREFIGHTER/EMT $51,000 - $53,000 annual salary (42-hour workweek) Applications can be found on the Town of Preston website: https://www.preston-ct.org Email completed application to Prestonhr@preston-ct.org General Description: Responds to incidents of fire, rescue, medical and other emergencies and non-emergencies related to public safety and performs related duties. Operates emergency apparatus and related equipment. Performs routine preventive maintenance, repair and inspection of department buildings, quarters, apparatus and equipment to ensure operational effectiveness and cleanliness. Participates in training and public education programs. Supervision Received: Reports directly to the Preston Fire Chief. Supervision Exercised: In the absence of an officer or senior firefighter, assumes the role of Incident Commander. Essential Job Duties & Tasks: • Responds to fire incidents, medical emergencies, hazardous materials and related incidents and performs various complex tasks to; prevent, control and extinguish fires, provide appropriate treatment, rescue persons, transport patients to hospitals, and deal with any other emergency conditions that may arise. • Drives fire apparatus and related vehicles, operates tools and other equipment as necessary. • Wears, maintains and inspects protective clothing and equipment including selfcontained breathing apparatus. • Documents emergency incidents and patient information on appropriate forms, reports, records and journals as required. • Performs daily checks and maintenance of all types of fire/rescue/EMS apparatus and related equipment. • Performs general housekeeping and minor repair functions to fire stations, equipment, and grounds. • Maintains a level of physical fitness necessary to perform essential duties. • Assist with public requests including events and fire prevention activities. * The essential duties described above are the primary functions and duties of the classification. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • Comprehensive knowledge of fire prevention, fire suppression principles, procedures, techniques and specialized equipment. • Ability to exercise mature judgment, maintain confidentiality, and make responsible decisions in accordance with established policies, procedures and guidelines. • Ability to communicate orally and in writing, including ability to discuss technical matters clearly and concisely. • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, town officials, volunteers and the public. • Knowledge of town roads, geography and response areas. Physical and Mental Requirements/Work Environment: • Tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing duties in both frigid and hot and humid atmospheres while wearing equipment that significantly impairs body-cooling mechanisms. Ability to rely on senses of sight, hearing, smell and touch to help determine the nature of the emergency, maintain personal safety and make critical decisions in a confused, chaotic and potentially life- threatening environment throughout the duration of the operation. • Work long periods of time requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration. • Perform a variety of tasks, including but not limited to lifting heavy objects on slippery, hazardous surfaces such as roof tops, ladders and both level and severe grades. • Ability to routinely lift and/or move up to fifty pounds and occasionally lift and/or move in excess of one hundred pounds. • Work in a drug, alcohol and tobacco free workplace. Minimum qualifications: • State of Connecticut certified Firefighter 1 • State of Connecticut certified Emergency Medical Technician • State of Connecticut certified Hazardous Materials Awareness Level • Valid State of Connecticut Class 2-Q or CDL vehicle operator license • Five years’ experience as a paid or volunteer firefighter / EMT • Become qualified on all department apparatus and equipment • Provide proof of physical ability to perform duties (CPAT or equivalent) The above description is illustrative of tasks and responsibilities.
